History and Rajshahi College
As
an education city the foundation of Rajshahi mega city
was laid through the establishment of Bawlia English
School in 1928. This institution became famous as the
path finer in the history of the modern education in
the East Bengal. Mainly “ Bawlia English School”
was established with a view to expand English education
infrastructure by the initiative of English officials
along with the cities of Rajshahi. The very little Bawlia
English School of that time is well known today as the
Rajshahi collegiate School. In 1836 the Bawlia English
School was renamed as Rajshahi Collegiate School and
became gradually familiar by this name and for the higher
education of the students of this school. It is a very
prime necessity a college and for the fulfillment of
this necessity the very first and best college, the
Rajshahi College was situated.
With
a view to establish a college in Rajshahi city, Raja
Horonath Roy Chowdhury of Dubal Hati donated a property
from his Jamindeary estate in 1872 and valuation of
that property was about tk5000/= and in 1873 the Government
permitted to upgrade this college in to a second class
education Institute. It was in 1873, when this college
was started by the side of collegiate school with only
six students and it is remarkable that out of those
six students one only was from Muslim community.
Within
two years after its establishment and because of its
growing progress of success and reputation, in 1875
there was the proposal of upgrading the college into
first class college and through the Rajshahi Association
the king of Dighapotia Promothnath donate tk15000 and
it helps the college to make it first class as per the
proposal. In 1878 this college was upgraded in to 1st
grade and B.A Course was stated from this time. At that
time MR.FT Dowding was the principal of this college.
As
a first class institute, Rajshahi College became famous
very rapidly. And that is why in 1878 this college was
permitted to start Masters course for the students.
In accordance with this the BL class was started in
1883. But in 1909 the registration of Kolilata University
was postponed. This step was probably the part of the
Education Squired Policy of East Bangle by the British
Government. But the Honours course was communing in
Rajshahi College probably from 1884-85 education year.
In
1873 Rajshahi College was started with only six students
towards an unknown future. But gradually the college
had in golden future by overcoming all uncertainty and
obstacles. In 1878 the number of student in Rajshahi
College was 100 and it increase in every year. In 1900
the number of students were 200 and in 1910 it was 400
and 1924 it increase up to 1000 and in 2006-2007 education
year the number of students is about 23000 and nine
academic buildings.
Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology
(RUET)
Rajshahi
University of Engineering and Technology (RUET) in the
second oldest Engineering University in Bangladesh.
It was founded in 1964 with four major departments civil,
Electrical and Electronic and Mechanical Engineering.
Later in 1986 it was converted into an independent institute
“ Bangladesh Institute if Technology (BIT), Rajshahi”.
Later in 2002 the name of this institute became Rajshahi
University of Engineering and Technology (RUET). It
has about two thousand students in undergraduate, postgraduate
engineering and science in this institute. It has also
200 teachers also.
Rajshahi
University
Rajshahi University is one of the important institutions
of Rajshahi as well as the northern part of Bangladesh.
It is located in Motihar, the eastern side of Rajshahi
city. The campus area is nearly 753 acres. It has boundary
wall and the total campus is controlled through three
boundary security gates. It has eleven large academic
buildings - five for the arts, business studies and
social sciences, four for the sciences and two for agriculture
studies.
Rajshahi Medical College
Rajshahi
Medical College was established in 1956. It is located
in Rajshahi. It is a state sponsored Medical College.
This Medical College has a large hospital and it provides
health care in the northern part of Bangladesh. Every
year a lot of students get admitted themselves in the
MBBS program.
